The children we serve come from various backgrounds and family situations. Our main mission is to serve children from 0-5 years old and their families, enabling the family to care for their child in their own home. Admitting a child into our own care is our last resort as it separates the child from his or her family. Unfortunately, Haiti is a country where poverty and sickness are an everyday struggle and we are often pushed to this last resort. The children we admit fall into two different categories of care we provide: Rehabilitative and Foster care
When a severely malnourished or sick child comes through our gate needing immediate care, and being admitted into one of our nutritions programs is not an option, we will admit the child for 1-3 months. During this time, the family is encouraged to make regular visits so see their child. The child is given solitary care by the medical manager in Haiti until he or she is stable. The child is then transitioned into the care of the trained Haitian nannies until he or she is healthy enough to thrive back at home with his or her family. The child and family are sent out with prayers and hugs from those who cared for the child at COTP.
Children are often referred to us by neighbors or local hospitals if they are found orphaned or abandoned. Our social workers work hard to research each child’s family history, if any, to see if there are any other family members that are able to care for the child. If we exhaust all other options, we will admit the child into our care and begin facilitating adoption for the child. Because we believe the importance of family and the developmental benefits of a family setting, we care for these children through foster care. In each foster care home there are a small group of children varying in ages and physical needs cared for by nannies and international parents. The children continue to live in these homes until the end of their adoption when their forever family comes to bring them home.
