Medika Mamba
In July of 2011, COTP received a grant which provided us with enough Medika Mamba (MM) to treat 30 children. COTP had been using MM for a few years on kids that were admitted here, but this grant allowed us to start a program to treat children from the community as well.
MM is a Ready-to Use Therapeutic Food made of ground roasted peanuts, powdered milk, cooking oil, sugar, vitamins, and minerals. It is made from locally grown peanuts and uses all local labor to grow, produce, and package the peanut butter, thus creating jobs in Haiti. The MM factory is located in Cap Haitien only 20 mins from COTP. MM is intended for children 6 months of age to 5 years old, who are moderately or severely malnourished. All a child has to do is eat a few table spoons of MM each day for 8-12 weeks, depending on their severity of malnutrition, and then the child will be plumped up to full health! MM has an 85% success rate! It costs approximately $65 USD to treat one child.
Having a MM program allows us another way to help empower families in our community to care for the needs of their children with out having to separate families. We are so thankful to have this program which saves lives and empowers families!
